Three people have been hurt in a helicopter crash in north Queensland.

They had been taking pictures of a development project when the accident happened near Cairns earlier today.

Inspector Ian Swan from Cairns Police says a fourth person escaped serious injury.

"The helicopter turned upside and crashed on the False Cape area and there were four persons in the helicopter at the time of the crash," he said.

"A couple of persons were injured and have been conveyed to the Cairns Base Hospital for further medical treatment."

An investigation is underway.
