Work to begin on new Narrabri hospital

Posted June 19, 2008 09:50:00

Work is about to start on the redevelopment of Narrabri's new hospital.

New South Wales Health Minister Reba Meagher says early site work will begin this week on the initial $5 million first stage.

Builders will demolish old buildings on the hospital site, build a temporary car park and relocate infrastructure.

Narrabri Hospital Action Group chairman Ross Gleeson says it marks the beginning of the end of a community-wide struggle that has taken almost 10 years.

"All we've been [asking] after all these years is for the Government to recognise a new facility has been needed," he said.

"That's been recognised in many reports commissioned by the Government.

"We based our campaign on saying 'hey, you've had the consultants do the reports, why don't you do what every report's said needs to be done?'

"And the community got behind that."
