A New South Wales far south coast man, extradited from Western Australia at the weekend for poaching abalone in Gippsland, has been remanded in custody.

Geoffrey John Tait, 40, of Merimbula, was first found by police last year at Cann River, in south-east Victoria, and faces abalone trafficking and possession charges.

His extradition from Geraldton to Melbourne is the result of a multi task force operation targeting NSW abalone poachers operating in Gippsland.

Fisheries Victoria says it is hoped the extradition and prosecution will send a warning to other would-be poachers.

Tait appeared in the Melbourne Magistrates Court earlier this week and was remanded in custody.

He did not enter a plea.
