Vic man duped individuals, businesses of $5m, court hears

Posted June 25, 2008 21:00:00

A Victorian court has heard how a 34-year-old man duped individuals, businesses and lending institutions out of almost five million dollars in cash, credit and goods.

Adam Paul Hemsley of Castlemaine is facing four counts of obtaining financial advantage by deception.

It is alleged he used phoney cheques to obtain $280,000 in credit between March and April this year.

The Bendigo Magistrates Court heard police believe Hemsley has been involved in 66 offences.

A detective told the court Hemsley had used false cheques and tricked people into giving him money.

He said Hemsley has a criminal history in Australia and the United States.

Hemsley represented himself and said the details of the case and his prior criminal history were grossly inaccurate.

The magistrate refused bail and said there was an unacceptable risk of future offending.

Hemsley is due to face court again in September.
