Waterfall art exhibition opens in NY

Posted June 27, 2008 13:00:00

A public art exhibition featuring four man-made waterfalls has opened in New York.

The waterfalls - created by the Danish artist Olafur Eliasson - stand up to 35 metres high on Manhattan's shoreline.

"It's about time and experiencing space," Eliasson, 41, said of his creation.

"Water has great potential to be both physical and very elusive, it can be many different things for many different people."

At the inauguration ceremony, New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg said that the waterfalls are an unbelievable sight.

"What a beautiful symbol of the energy and vitality that we are bringing back to our waterfront," he said.

Water from the East River is pumped to the top of four platforms and cascades back down.

The work will be on display until October.
