The South Australian Government says more than half the computers funded by the Federal Government's school program will be new.

The Opposition claims that only existing computers will be replaced in state schools and many students will go without.

South Australia will receive just over $4 million from the program which Education Minister Jane Lomax-Smith says is only the first payment.

Dr Lomax-Smith says it will be shared by 47 schools which will also be able to spend any leftover funds.

"Any funds that are left over after licences or cabling will be allocated back to the school and quite likely they will find their priorities, but the rules are that money has to be spent on IT infrastructure and that's what will occur," she said.
