Action group airs desal plant flooding fears

Posted July 7, 2008 14:28:00

There are concerns the site of the proposed desalination plant near Wonthaggi is prone to flooding.

Heavy rain and storm surges caused the Bass Highway at Kilcunda to flood last Wednesday.

Chris Heislers from the Your Water Your Say Action Group says claims by the Victorian Government that flooding last year was a one-in-100 year event are false, because the area floods every year.

He says climate change will make the flood risk worse.

"We'd expect that with sea level rises of up to a metre, that particular area is going to flood more and more, particularly with storm surges etc from the ocean," he said.

"I think any international company looking at this site will have to look seriously twice about investing their money when there are such risks involved."
