Police on the New South Wales far north coast have confirmed a body found in the Tweed River yesterday is that of missing Chinderah man Sean Staunton.

The 35-year-old disappeared on Thursday afternoon, when he took his five year-old son for a boat ride on the river.

An off-duty nurse later found the boy floating unconscious in the water. She dragged him to shore and revived him.

The submerged boat was discovered on Friday and rescuers spent the weekend searching the waterway.

A resident found a man's body just before 7:00am (AEDT) yesterday but police were unable to confirm the identity.

A report will be prepared for the coroner after a post-mortem examination is conducted on Mr Staunton's body later this week.
