An Australian business is expanding into the Middle East to take advantage of a high demand for housing construction materials.

Steel Building Systems of Elizabeth West in Adelaide will establish nine plants in the region, the first in Abu Dhabi next year.

The venture is expected to generate $150 million worth of steel frame business.

Founder Kevin Weeks says there is huge demand for housing in the Middle East.

"They have huge developments going on, in fact in Abu Dhabi there's $800 billion worth of development going to take place in the next five years," he said.

"So you can imagine the amount of materials they require and concrete and reinforcing steel is becoming extremely expensive."
