Tweed Shire to use marina land for recreation

Posted July 10, 2008 11:41:00

The Tweed Shire Council says land that was earmarked for a controversial marina development will now be used for public recreation.

The council sold the riverfront land at Chinderah in 2005 to allow for a 29-berth facility, but the contract of sale allowed a buyback option if the marina was not built within a designated time frame.

Council general manager Mike Rayner says construction has been delayed by local protests and court challenges over a bigger development proposal.

Mr Rayner says getting the land back will be a positive move.

"The land is owned by RiverCult Proprietary Limited who are the second or third owner, I think, of the land, not the original applicant," he said.

"The land is a very small parcel.

"It was actually, interestingly enough, the Pacific Highway before the Chinderah Bypass was constructed and that will just be used as public space for foreshore recreation."
