Council not told of desal plant road closure

Posted July 11, 2008 14:06:00

The chief executive officer of the Bass Coast Shire Council, Allan Bawden, says a decision to close a road near the desalination plant site at Kilcunda is an attempt to block community protests.

The road, near Lower Powelett Road, was closed after protesters blockaded access to the desalination site on Tuesday.

Three people were arrested.

Mr Bawden says the council was not told about the decision to close the road.

"I understand that they now have 24-hour security on site and that security company will facilitate emergency access for any property owners that need it," he said.

"I'm not aware whether they've spoken to property owners about that."
