Bad start to bushfire season

Posted July 15, 2008 12:14:00

Bushfires NT is concerned about a particularly bad start to the fire season, with more than 100 wild fires reported in the last two months.

The senior fire control officer says the fire season started early and there have been seven fire ban days already.

Andrew Turner says a few years ago, the Territory only had an average of about 15 fire ban days a year.

He says most wildfires have been brought under control by volunteers and staff.

"Certainly the wild fires have been well contained. There've been a couple of incidents where fires have got away. We had one last week at Corroboree, also Adelaide River near Lake Bennet and one out at Dundee on Friday which were sizable sort of fires."

Bushfires NT is urging land owners to make sure fire breaks are maintained.
