Murwillumbah Hospital obstetric services not to be downgraded: Minister

Posted July 16, 2008 11:07:00

New South Wales Health Minister Reba Meagher says the Government does not want to downgrade obstetric services at the Murwillumbah Hospital.

The Minister made the announcement during a visit to Tweed Heads Hospital yesterday to open a new ward and BreastScreen Clinic.

She says the transfer of after-hours emergency obstetric patients to Tweed Heads is still being considered but obstetric specialists will remain at Murwillumbah Hospital.

"Murwillumbah Hospital will continue to deliver obstetric services 24 hours a day, seven days a week," she said.

"Further evidence of our commitment to [Murwillumbah Hospital] is that we have just recruited a new obstetrician who is going through his accreditation with the appropriate medical authorities and is expected to start later in the year."
