Protesta storms into Cup contention

Posted July 20, 2008 08:49:00

Darwin-trained horse Protesta announced itself as a Darwin Cup contender yesterday with a win in the $100,000 Northern Territory Derby.

The three year-old bay gelding came in ahead of more highly fancied favourite He's Here in a sprint to the finish at Fannie Bay.

Trainer Stephen Brown says his horse had the goods as it ran out the winner by a comfortable margin.

"It was a bit hard to imagine that we could beat Kerry Petrick's horse but he ran a good race in the Guineas and I think they just need that run under their belts," he said.

"He's a pretty handy horse. All he had to do was have that run under his belt and get to handle the dirt and away they go."
