Dubbo City Council considers CBD bicycle lockers

The Dubbo City Council will next week be asked to approve the installation of bicycle lockers in the central business district to encourage more cycling.

Last night's Works and Services Committee endorsed a trial of the lockers at two sites in the Church Street carpark and the Macquarie Regional Library.

Councillor Matthew Dickerson put forward the idea and says he hopes it encourages more residents to consider the alternative form of transport.

"Every resident in Dubbo, unless they need their car during the day, could literally ride their bike to work," he said.

"Dubbo's not that big a place that you couldn't ride to work if you live within Dubbo.

"By having some secure lockers in strategic locations, I think it's a great encourager to actually get people to ride to work."

However, Kathy Ferry from the Dubbo Bicycle Users Group says the council needs to do more if it wants people to choose bikes instead of cars.

"I don't think council's doing as much as it possibly could to encourage people to get out on their bikes and cycle to work, and take the kids to school on their bikes," she said.

"If you had some off-road cycleways people might be keener to get out there on their bike and take their kids out where they know they're not going to have to dice with the traffic."
