Suicide bomber wounds three Afghan civilians

Posted July 22, 2008 14:22:00

A suicide bomber has wounded three civilians in an attack in the Afghan capital, Kabul, a police official said.

Taliban militants have launched some 100 suicide attacks so far this year, mostly targeting Afghan and international security forces, but as much as 80 per cent of their victims are civilians, security experts say.

The bomber struck early in the morning in the Gozargah area of the capital, near to the historic tomb of Babur, the 16th century founder of India's Mughal dynasty.

Bomb attacks in Kabul are comparatively rare compared to cities in the south and east where the Taliban insurgency is concentrated.

Afghan forces beefed up security in Kabul early this year in an attempt to clamp down on suicide bombings, but still some militants have got through the cordon.
