Australian tsunami 'only a matter of time'

Posted July 23, 2008 08:16:00

A leading scientist says its only a matter of time before a tsunami hits Australia.

Dr Barry Drummond heads the Earth Monitoring Group of Geoscience Australia and is developing Australia's tsunami warning system.

He says tsunamis have hit Australia in the past.

"There is historical evidence of tsunamis striking many parts of the Australian coast on both the east and the west," he said.

"There was, for example, in 1994, an earthquake off Mexico, which caused a small tsunami that was registered off Murwillumbah.

"The question is not how likely, but how big?"
