Higher rates plan for Glenelg security

Nightspots at Glenelg in Adelaide are set to face a council rate rise to fund extra security and alcohol support services.
Holdfast Bay Council has approved a plan which could cost hotels and clubs that operate beyond midnight up to $25,000 a year.
The council received a petition from residents about issues stemming from late trading.
Councillor Tim Looker says the security patrols need to be bolstered.
"Those fellows are on their own and at times they can't get out of the vehicle because it's not safe for them," he said.
"Other times they've been shot at by water pistols, had their tyres let down, so we really need to have those fellows at times work in pairs to keep the disorderly people that are travelling through our suburban streets in order."
Ian Horne of the Hotels Association says a rate rise will hurt businesses and dampen Glenelg's nightlife.
"It's prohibition using taxation as a blunt instrument," he said.
"It would seem that some councillors really simply want to turn Glenelg into a retirement village, an expensive retirement village, by ensuring that no-one can participate in any activities after midnight."
