Gladstone Council urged to reconsider desalination plant option

Posted July 23, 2008 09:22:00

The Gladstone Regional Council is being urged to consider another option to the current water and sewerage plan for the coastal communities of Agnes Water and 1770.

The council says it is committed to solving water and sewage problems at Agnes Water and 1770 with a controversial $40 million desalination and sewage plant.

The council maintains it is the best option given a range of circumstances, but a delegation on behalf of the Sunrise at 1770 development is pleading with the council to consider other options.

Ben Keele from the Central Queensland University says some of the reports and figures the council has relied on are questionable.

He says there are other less expensive solutions that will not pump sewage brine back into the ocean.

Mayor George Creed says the council has listened to the deputation but it will not make any guarantees.
