Pilgrim sponsorship to pave the path for sister town

Posted July 23, 2008 11:22:00

The Kiama East Timor Friendship Association says it hopes the recent sponsorship of pilgrims to Australia assists in a proposed sister town agreement with an East Timorese village.

The association held a civic reception for the pilgrims in Kiama on Tuesday, some of whom are from the village of Zumalai.

Association member Gabrielle Fogarty says the Kiama Mayor will fly to the village next year in the hope of signing a friendship agreement

"We have been trying to establish this officially for two or more years but East Timor has had such a lot of uprising and a little bit of chaos with trying to form government that it has taken a long time to actually get the friendship formally accepted," she said.
