The Premier Alan Carpenter does not want State MPs to receive a payrise this year.

Mr Carpenter and his department have lodged a submission with the Salaries and Allowances Tribunal requesting that wages be frozen until August 2009.

A spokesman for the Premier says the wages of Federal MPs were not increased this year and a similar path should be followed in Western Australia.

He also says the interest rate rises by the Reserve Bank earlier this year highlight the important of controlling inflation and that the state economy needs to be kept strong.

The Tribunal will make its determination on MPs salaries next month.
