US urges Indian approval of nuclear cooperation deal

Posted July 23, 2008 15:33:00

The United States has called on India to move ahead swiftly to approve a controversial deal on civilian nuclear cooperation between the two countries, after the Indian Government survived a parliamentary vote of no confidence.

The vote was called after left wing parties withdrew their support for India's governing Coalition in protest against the US agreement.

US State Department spokesman Gonzalo Gallegos encouraged India to move forward with the deal.

"This initiative represents a unique opportunity to assist India in meeting its growing energy needs while bolstering the overall non-proliferation regime and strengthening US India ties," he said.

"Next step in this process is for India to safeguard this agreement to be approved by the International Atomic Energy Agency's board of governors and we look forward to an August 1 meeting of the board."
