Venzuela seeks Russian protection from United States

Posted July 23, 2008 15:44:00

Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez has called for a strategic alliance with Russia to protect Venezuela from the United States.

The call came as the two countries agreed to extend bilateral cooperation on energy.

After meeting his Venezuelan counterpart, Russian President Dmitri Medvedev said three Russian energy companies would be allowed to operate in Venezuela's Orinoco Belt.

Mr Chavez says oil and military cooperation are vital to protect Venezuela.

"We'll also keep working and making progress in military technology to equip Venezuela's defence into guaranteed Venezuelan sovereignty, which is threatened by the United States, by the empire of the United States," he said.
