Adelaide City Council wants Central Market trading on Wednesdays as part of its plan to extend shopping hours.
Traders will be required be open until 7:00pm on Tuesdays and Thursdays from September.
The council says that will cater for a growing number of city residents.
Central Market committee chair, Anne Moran, says Wednesday trading is next on the horizon.
"We're hoping that Wednesday, after this is seen to be the success we're sure it will be ... a solid block of days would be great," she said.
She says traders are supportive of the extra evenings and had noted shoppers were keen to visit the market after their working day.
Ms Moran says there was consultation with a traders' group but concedes that word may not have got to all stallholders yet.
Trader Paul Noakes is against the change.
"Everyone doesn't want it - I'm talking about the traders. There will be some customers out there that may want it but I really don't think it is what we want," he said.
Ms Moran is expecting traders' support.
"It absolutely could become a problem if most of the traders didn't open, but what we're hearing from the traders' representatives that's not going to happen," she said.
"I mean it's a bit of a suck-it-and-see situation, like it was with Sunday [trading trial]."
