Wild dog review overdue: grazier

Posted July 24, 2008 13:03:00

A grazier in the Queensland's central-west has welcomed the State Government's review of its wild dog strategy, saying it is long overdue.

Andrew Martin from Tambo says more effective controls need to be adopted by councils across the state, including increased bounties for wild dogs.

He says wild dogs are causing significant stock losses in some areas and are also spreading disease.

"There's a disease aspect that doesn't get a lot of air but is certainly there and that's Caninumneospora; for lack of a better word, contagious abortion," he said.

"I've had personal experience, I tested a mob of cattle for what I suspected was Pesky Virus and a bit over half the mob I had here had the Pesky Virus but more than half of that half had Caninumneospora."
