United States Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice has been forced to enter a dinner hosted in Perth in her honour through a back entrance, because of a group of anti-war protesters camped outside.

Dr Rice touched down in Perth last night on what is been described as a personal visit to Foreign Minister Stephen Smith's home town.

She then travelled to the dinner hosted by Western Australian Premier Alan Carpenter at the University of Western Australia.

But about two dozen protesters from the Socialist Alliance, brandishing anti-war placards were waiting for Dr Rice outside the dinner.

She was ushered into the function through a back entrance and was then greeted with a traditional Aboriginal welcome.

She will spend most of tomorrow in Perth, where she will visit private girls school Mercedes College and the Swanbourne Barracks to lay a wreath at the Kings Park War Memorial.

She is also expected to speak to the media with Mr Smith.
