Three people taken to hospital after a police chase.

Police say they called off a pursuit near Mildura in north-west Victoria, before the car they had been chasing crashed near Merbein.

Police say the driver refused to stop when they tried to pull over a utility in about 5:15am (AEST) today.

They say officers in the divisional van chased the ute, reaching speeds of 120 kilometres an hour before calling off the pursuit between Mildura and Merbein.

Police found the ute crashed in a culvert beside a railway line in McEdwards Street, just outside Merbein, a short time later.

Inspector Paul Naylor says the speed the car was reaching on the winding road was one of the reasons police called off the pursuit.

He says local police are investigating and waiting to interview three men who were injured in the crash.

One person suffered back injuries while the other two were not seriously hurt.

All are aged in their 20s.

They were taken to Mildura Base Hospital.

Police are investigating the events leading up to the crash.

"Ethical standards would be called in if we found there was to be something out of normal procedures, but at this early stage it doesnt appear that's the case at all," he said.
