Football Queensland says the implementation of an A-League team in Townsville will give talented young soccer players in the state's north more opportunities to further their careers.

North Queensland FC won a provisional licence on Thursday to join the A-League competition in the 2009-2010 season.

Football Queensland development officer Paul Lonton says the move will give junior players a goal.

"The most important part is that it completes the pathway for our young players," he said.

"It means they don't have to go to Brisbane to continue their career."
