Man hurt, dogs die in Gippsland fire

Posted July 25, 2008 11:11:00

A Gippsland man escaped serious injury, but lost his two pet dogs, in a house fire at Kalimna near Lakes Entrance early this morning.

Leigh Zapelli aged 19, woke at about 2:30am (AEST) to find the house full of smoke and flames coming from the kitchen.

"Well I couldn't see and I couldn't breathe," he said.

"I smashed a window and got my head out so I could breathe.

"When the floods were on last year my room was the only room that flooded, so I moved in here and then I just didn't move back."

He slashed his hand as he was escaping through a bathroom window.

Mr Zapelli says the house, one of two on his parents' Gippsland property, was totally destroyed.
