Mackay boy considered for bravery award

Posted July 25, 2008 12:50:00

A seven-year-old north Queensland boy is being considered for a bravery award after calmly calling for help when a fire broke out in his house on Thursday night.

Officers were called to the Mackay home about 8:30pm AEST after a fire started on a gas stove in the kitchen.

The boy telephoned 000 while his mother tried to put out the fire.

She was treated at the scene for minor burns and smoke inhalation.

Joanne Keevers was the operator who took the call. She was very impressed with the boy's effort.

"I played it back on the tape to my work partner and she was really impressed by his actions as well," she said.

"I felt he should get recognition and that's the best thing for kids, is positive reinforcement isn't it?"
