CFA seals Warrnambool gas leak

Posted July 25, 2008 14:40:00

Firefighters have prevented an explosion at a Warrnambool TAFE campus, after sealing a damaged gas pipe.

The Country Fire Authority's Operations Manager, Henry Barton, says firefighters took three hours to seal the leaking pipe.

"We had to make sure we'd taken all the precautions to make it as safe as possible for the firefighters who have had to go down in the trench and put these clamps on," he said.

"There was an element of danger there, but fortunately no one's been injured."

Staff and students were evacuated from the building at about 10:00 am (AEST) after an excavator caused a gas leak at the Timor Street construction site.

Roads were closed and trains to a nearby station were cancelled while the problem was resolved.
