Motorist dies after plunging into Sydney river

A 40-year-old man has died despite the quick action of a southern Sydney police officer to get him out of


a submerged car.

Police say the man's car suddenly veered across the bridge on General Holmes Drive this afternoon and ended up in the Cooks River.

Passersby tried to swim to the car, but it drifted into deeper water and sank.

Sergeant Bruce Jarvis a recreational diver, rushed from Kogarah station to a local dive shop and borrowed diving gear.

He says the police divers were still 20 minutes away.

"Despite resuscitation attempts on a police boat an in the ambulance the man died at St George Hospital," he said.
