Former husband jailed for frenzied attack

Jail for abusive partner

A Perth woman who was stabbed and nearly strangled by her former husband says she hopes her case serves as a warning to other victims of domestic violence.

Tanya Ammoun suffered 27 knife wounds when her ex husband, Ali Ammoun, attacked her at her mother's house in January last year.

He'd earlier attacked her mother and repeatedly bashed her head on the floor.

Ali Ammoun was found guilty of offences including attempted murder and causing grievous bodily harm.

He has been sentenced to 16 years jail and will have to serve 14 years before he can be released.

Outside the court Mrs Ammoun said she had suffered abuse during her 13 year marriage, but it was very difficult to leave her husband.

"Very happy to be alive and one thing I'd like to say is that people should be aware that domestic violence is a serious form of social problem in Australia and there should be compasssion and awareness rather than criticism and judgement of victims," she said.
