Hit-run suspect 'fabricated evidence'

A Sydney inquest into the hit-and-run death of a young boy has been told the main suspect fabricated evidence to mislead police.

Detective Sergeant Robert Allison has spent the last five years investigating the death of Bryce Rolls.

The eight-year-old died after being hit by a car while crossing Harrow Road at Kogarah in April 2003.

The driver of the car did not stop.

Detective Sergeant Allison has told Glebe Coroner's Court he believes Queensland man Peter Graham was driving the car which collided with the boy. He has been named as the main person of interest in the case.

The policeman has told the inquest he thinks Mr Graham made false statements and fabricated evidence to cover his tracks.

The court has heard the police had a great deal of difficulty investigating the death because of inconsistencies in the versions of events given by Peter Graham, his girlfriend Anne Piper and his father Barry Graham.

The court also heard Mr Graham was talking on his phone at the time of the incident and may have been distracted.

The hearing has been adjourned until the September 1 while Mr Graham seeks legal aid.
