Truckies' strike impacts saleyards

Posted July 29, 2008 12:15:00

The national strike by truck drivers has had a dramatic impact on central west New South Wales saleyards.

The number of sheep yarded at Dubbo on Monday was down by 70 per cent, while at Forbes cattle numbers almost halved.

Sale organisers had expected most livestock transporters to be operating as usual.

However, a Dubbo stock agent, Bill Tatt, says many farmers were sympathetic to the truck drivers' cause.

"We had clients that had stock booked in for the draw on Saturday morning and they rang their respective personnel and said, 'I've had a think about this over the weekend I do support where trucks drivers are coming from and with that in mind I am going to hold my stock back'," he said.
