The shopworkers union says all three Starbucks stores in Adelaide are to be shut.

The US-based coffee chain has announced that 685 jobs will go and 61 of its 84 Australian stores will close as part of a major restructure.

The Adelaide stores are in the city, Glenelg and Noarlunga.

It is unclear how many jobs have been lost locally.

Union secretary Peter Malinauskas says he understands the shops will close almost immediately.

"Predominantly they are casuals, there are a few permanent part-time employees but typically there are younger people who are in these roles at university and so forth, so unfortunately all these people have lost their jobs," he said.

"I can confirm that the majority of those employees will be entitled to a redundancy.

"Starbucks are sort of retaining a presence in Australia, there are still 23 stores that are going to remain open in the eastern states so they're still very much a fluid company with assets and with cash in the bank, so there's no reason why those employees who are entitled to a redundancy shouldn't be receiving it."
