London bombings memorial design unveiled

Posted August 1, 2008 10:00:00

The final design of a permanent memorial to the 52 victims of the July 7, 2005 suicide bombings in London has been unveiled.

Fifty-two steel posts, each three metres tall, will be erected in Hyde Park to represent all those killed in the attacks on the capital's transport network.

The pillars will be grouped in four linked clusters to reflect the attacks on three trains and a bus.

A plaque listing the victims' names will be placed on a grass bank near the memorial, the Department for Culture, Media and Sport said.

Architect Kevin Carmody, part of the design team, said he hoped it would be "a place of relative quiet for contemplation for the families and the wider public".

In a statement, the group representing the July 7 victims' families said it would be a fitting tribute.

"It represents the enormity of our loss, both on a personal and public level," it said.

Work is expected to start on the memorial in the autumn for an official unveiling on July 7, 2009.
