NSW to review surrogacy laws

A review of New South Wales' surrogacy laws will examine whether surrogate mothers should be allowed to have their expenses reimbursed.
The Legislative Council's law and justice committee will carry out an in-depth review of surrogacy laws, including whether commissioning parents should be allowed to help surrogate mothers pay their costs.
But Attorney-General John Hatzistergos says there will not be any consideration of commercial surrogacy.
He says the review will take place at the same time as state and federal governments work towards national surrogacy guidelines.
"What we're seeking to do here is develop some national harmony and some consistency, in what is an extremely sensitive area requiring difficult ethical and moral issues to be resolved," he said.
The review will also consider issues including the legal rights of those involved in surrogacy and surrogacy for same-sex couples.
