A prominent young Indigenous leader in Queensland has been charged with breaching alcohol restrictions in a Cape York community in the state's far north.

Police allege Gina Castelain took a small bottle of spirits with her on a flight to Aurukun last Friday.

The 24-year-old has been charged with possessing alcohol in a restricted area and she is expected to appear in the local court later this month.

Castelain sits on the board of Wik Projects Limited and is also involved in negotiations with Chinese miner Chalco over plans for a bauxite mine near Aurukun.

She has been unavailable for comment.
