Calls for Government to bolster business confidence

Posted August 5, 2008 08:49:00

Tasmania's Opposition parties have called on the Premier to restore faith in the economy as business confidence continues to fall.

The calls come as the Chamber of Commerce and Industry revealed confidence was at an eight-year low.

The chamber's findings suggest the State's business community is under major pressure because of rising costs.

The Opposition leader, Will Hodgman, was quick to respond, calling for the Premier to instigate local solutions.

"He has to say that his Government accepts there's an issue, and he's got the policies to combat it," said Mr Hodgman.

"When it comes to skilling up Tasmanians, when it comes to the cost of living in this place, when it comes to providing appropriate transport infrastructure to allow business to prosper, they are all things that this Government can control."

The Greens leader, Nick McKim, also called on the Government to act, but added that significant economic benefits will be lost if the Premier fails to recognise sustainable technologies as a growth industry.

"What we've got is a Government mired in the past," he said.

The survey showed rising energy costs were a major constraint to business activity.
