Morgan Freeman is recovering from surgery to repair injuries sustained in a serious car crash, a spokeswoman for the actor said.

Freeman, 71, cheated death yesterday when a car he was driving left the road and rolled over, leaving the Oscar-winning actor with a broken arm, elbow and minor shoulder damage.

A female passenger travelling in Freeman's car needed to be cut from the wreckage of the single-vehicle accident in Mississippi.

Freeman underwent surgery overnight at Memphis's Regional Medical Centre, Los Angeles-based spokeswoman Donna Lee said.

"Morgan is doing well after surgery last night to reconnect nerves and to repair damage to his left arm and hand," Ms Lee said in a statement.

"The surgery lasted approximately four-and-a-half hours, including recovery, and he is in good spirits and was visiting with family members this morning.

"He was walking ... and is looking forward to his release as soon as possible," she added.

Freeman won an Academy Award for his role in 2004's Million Dollar Baby and is famous for his authoritative voice that has been used to narrate films, documentaries and commercials.
