A Melbourne court has been told former North Melbourne captain Wayne Carey will fight charges of assaulting police and resisting arrest.
Carey is charged with offences over a confrontation with police at his Port Melbourne apartment in January.
Police told the court the matter will go to a contested hearing.
The court heard Carey asked a security guard to call police to remove his girlfriend and a friend from his home.
Police alleged that when they arrived Carey refused to let them in and that he pushed an officer in the chest.
It is alleged that Carey then resisted arrest, tried to head-butt an officer, struck a second to the head with an elbow and pushed another into a wall.
Carey's lawyer said the facts are in dispute and his client will plead not guilty.
Outside the court, Carey made a brief statement.
"The matter's before the court and as you heard I'll be pleading not guilty and in due course the courts will make it's decision," he said.
