Stawell Mayor up-beat despite job cuts

Posted August 6, 2008 13:04:00

The Mayor of the Northern Grampians Shire, Bryan Small, is confident the Western Victorian town of Stawell will bounce back from recent job cuts.

The Department of Primary Industries will close its office at Stawell as part of a restructure that involves 70 job losses across the state.

Last week, Motorway Tyres went into administration and it is unclear whether its 34 Stawell-based employees will get paid their full entitlements.

Councillor Small says it has been a bad week, but he says the town has a lot going for it.

"Stawell is a very resilient community, there's a lot of big projects going on there at the moment," he said.

"The town feels good, it looks good and I've been talking to the Motorway employees in the last 24 hours.

"They are really positive, they're out there, they're going to get themselves employed one way or another."
