14-day rail pass 'cutting station queues'

Posted August 6, 2008 14:28:00

The New South Wales Government says a trial of a new fortnightly discounted rail ticket is proving to be a success.

More than 60,000 tickets - about 16,000 every fortnight - have been sold since the trial began in May and now account for more than 20 per cent of rail pass sales in the CBD.

Transport Minister John Watkins says that is having an impact on the Monday morning queues.

"Of course weekly tickets or the fortnightly tickets you can purchase them any day of the week. Unfortunately most people because of habit do that Mondays and Tuesdays," he said.

"If we can push that number across to other days that's a benefit. If we can halve the number of people queuing by getting them to do it just once a fortnight that will also have a benefit."

The 14-day Pay Day pass is available at all train stations with ticket windows.
