A Perth-based clean energy company could start building a wave farm off the South Coast within two years.

Carnegie Corporation wants to establish a 50 megawatt wave farm near Sandpatch in Albany, capable of providing power for up to 30,000 homes.

This week, the State Government granted Carnegie exclusive access to 30,000 hectares of coast around Albany to explore sites for the farm.

The Managing Director of Carnegie Corporation, Michael Ottaviano, says the company will now begin onsite feasibility studies and start applying for environmental approvals.

"Australia is in this wonderful position that it has got this incredible where energy resource right around the whole southern half of WA, he said.

"Albany is one of a number of sites that stands out as being particularly good.

"Beyond the good resource, it has also got the transmission structure that allows you to export the electricity back into the whole electrical grid."
