Firefighters tackle cottage blaze

Posted August 7, 2008 08:22:00

A Broken Hill fire station officer, Sue Collins, says it took four fire trucks and about 25 crew members to put out yesterday's fire at a cottage in Newton Street.

Full-time firefighters and retained crews from both the central and south stations fought the blaze.

Station officer Collins says there were fears people may have been inside the house, but it was empty.

She says the crews were kept at the scene for some time.

"When we arrived we found a timber and iron cottage fully alight - our first priority in any fire is search and rescue and protecting surrounding properties and we got to work doing that," she said.

"It took over an hour to extinguish the main bulk of the fire. However, due to the fact that there were numerous hot spots up inside the roof timber it actually took more than four hours to fully extinguish the fire."
