Zimbabwe facing severe food shortages by next year: Red Cross

The International Red Cross is warning that almost half of Zimbabwe's population could face severe food shortages by the beginning of next year.

The aid agency has launched a $26 million emergency appeal to help 2 million Zimbabweans who it says are short of food because of the country's economic collapse, drought, and crop failures.

The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies is warning that figure could rise to 5 million by January next year.

Meanwhile, Zimbabwe's ruling and opposition parties have united in calling for an end to the political violence which is tearing the country apart.

Talks between the two parties are continuing and there is speculation that an agreement on a power-sharing deal may be close.
