It appears there has been a tragic ending to a five-day search for a bushwalker missing in the Gold Coast hinterland in south east Queensland.

A rescue helicopter crew have retrieved a body that is believed to that of missing bushwalker Robert Young.

Mr Young, 65, from Bli Bli on the Sunshine Coast, became separated from a group he was walking with on Saturday afternoon.

Police, State Emergency Service volunteers and helicopters have been searching the park for several days and were joined by army and Emergency Response Team officers yesterday.

Police say a local bushwalker called police last night and told them he had found a man's body in a remote part of the Lamington national park.

Regional rescue coordinator Inspector Barry Day said the area was too dangerous for searchers to go in.

"It's just steep and one slip would now doubt result in a very serious injury," he said.

A helicopter winched personnel into the area this morning.

Police and a paramedic then had to hike for more than five kilometres before finding the body.

Police are yet to confirm the identity of the body.
