Man arrested in UK over French student murders

Posted August 7, 2008 11:27:00

British police investigating the frenzied killings of two French students in London say they have arrested a 19-year-old man on suspicion of murder, the seventh arrest in the case.

The man, who was not identified, was held in Margate, a seaside resort 95 kilometres east of London, and would be transferred to a police station in the capital, a police statement said.

The June 29 murders of 23-year-old biochemistry students Laurent Bonomo and Gabriel Ferez shocked people on both sides of the Channel.

The pair were tied up, stabbed scores of times, and Mr Bonomo's south London apartment was set ablaze.

Police say they were among the most gruesome murders they have investigated.

Police have previously charged 23-year-old Daniel Sonnex with the murders and with attempting to pervert the course of justice.

They also charged Nigel Edward Farmer, 33, with the murders, as well as arson and attempting to pervert the course of justice.

Two other men and a woman have been arrested and freed on bail but not charged.

Police have said they will take no further action against a sixth person who was arrested last month and later released, a 21-year-old man.

The slayings took place during the recent wave of knife crime in the British capital.

French newspapers said the slayings showed how dangerous the British capital has become.

British police say London is safe for a city of its size and the murder rate, about 160 killings a year, has been steady for the past several years.
