Chamber backs mine school rethink

Posted August 7, 2008 14:22:00

Western Australia's mining lobby has welcomed Curtin University's decision to reinstate first and second year programs at the WA School of Mines.

The university yesterday reversed a decision to axe courses at its Kalgoorlie campus after a groundswell of community support and intense lobbying by community and industry leaders.

Nicole Roocke from the Chamber of Minerals and Energy says her group will work with Curtin to lobby the Federal Government to address inequities in funding for regional universities.

"It's important for both Curtin and the industry to work together to be able to ensure we do have the professionals that are needed for the industry," she said.

"It's also important for Curtin and the industry to work together and engage with the Federal Government to ensure that their funding addresses some of the issues in delivering courses in regional areas such as Kalgoorlie."
